The photo on the left was taken the 4th week of September, 2013. The photo on the right was taken the 4th week of September, 2019. All the glacier photos have been shot from the bird observation deck on the Dyke Road in Courtenay, BC, about 20 miles from the glacier. This represents seven years of glacial melt.
Personal Carbon Cap
Every person on the planet has a carbon footprint, and we are going to have to ration that carbon with a Personal Carbon Cap, or PCC. I suggest a respected scientific body such as NASA or NOAA calculate the PCC. Just like a speed limit on the highway, everyone will have to obey that number. Who knows, the number might be large enough to take that trip to Hawaii, but only if you skip the dairy and the meat, and maybe put up solar panels to heat and power the house – but that number gets smaller and smaller, the longer we wait.
Ecocide Laws must be brought in
A recent Guardian article by George Monbiot told the story of the late Polly Higgins, an English barrister who was fighting to create the international crime of Ecocide. Ecocide “means serious damage to, or destruction of, the natural world and the Earth’s systems.” Higgins wanted to make “the people who commission it – such as chief executives and government ministers – criminally liable for the harm they do to others, while creating a legal duty of care for life on Earth.”
